Winterizing irrigation at elevation

Ceres Landcare · November 12, 2025

At elevation, irrigation systems face a compressed season. Nights cool quickly, and a single early freeze can damage valves or backflow assemblies if they are still charged with water.

We recommend a clear shutdown sequence: isolate the water source, open low points to drain lateral lines where appropriate, and winterize components per manufacturer guidance—especially sensitive elements like smart controllers and weather sensors.

If you are unsure whether your system was designed with adequate drainage for your slope and soil, a fall walkthrough can catch issues before ice expands in fittings or poly lines. Planning ahead is almost always less costly than spring repairs.

What clients say

What has stood out most to me about the experience of working with Ceres Landcare are the professional people, their quality work for us and their flexibility. Many times I have had Ceres leaders walk my resort properties with me to develop bids for side projects that came up. This has included landscape repairs for specific owners and particular lawn enhancements for our building grounds. I even brought in Ceres to hang Holiday Lights at one of my properties when I was in a bind. Ceres Landcare is a great partner for me as a property manager.
